About the significance and development of motion graphic title sequences in movies


This paper deals with the issue of title-sequences and tries to answer the question, theoretically as well as practically, why title-sequences have become such a special form of cinema since the new interpretation by Saul Bass. Firstly, the terms title-design, title-sequence and similar concepts will be defined in detail. Furthermore, I will discuss the development of fi lm and, thus, the history of title-sequences. Therefore, an overview of very important events in the history of title-sequences and the most infl uential title-designers will be established. For this purpose, it is unavoidable to discuss Saul Bass and some of his most outstanding works in detail. A classification of the title-sequences does not only lead towards a better understanding of the functions of the different parts the title-sequences consists of, it is, moreover, helpful for the further structure of the mere graphic title-sequences in the last chapter. A short excursus to animation is, nevertheless, necessary in order to understand and explain the advantages and disadvantages of motion graphics in title-sequences. The last chapter documents my practical work, the title-sequence for an imaginary remake of the classic movie „La Belle et la Bête“ by Jean Cocteau. The documentation consists of the content as well as the aesthetic working process including all occurring problems and approaches to solutions.]]>
